Your baby is of the size of a Cabbage!
At 30 weeks, your baby is somewhere around 43 cm long and weighs approximately 1.1 to 1.4 kg. There’s a lot more going on this week that you might want to find out about – read on to learn more!
Your baby’s brain will continue to develop, and around this week, it’ll start to wrinkle as those creases and folds form to make room for new tissue. These are also known as convolutions, which allow the brain to hold more brain cells.
Red blood cells start to form in your baby’s bone marrow.
Around this stage of development, your baby’s bones will start to harden. However, baby’s skull will remain soft and flexible in preparation for delivery. That is because the soft bones of the skull will pass over each other as your baby makes his or her way through the narrow birth canal. This makes the skull a little smaller, so baby can pass through more easily. For this reason, some babies are born with a cone-shaped head. Don’t worry though, the skull goes back into shape soon after the birth.
This week, your baby may have hair on the head. Remember, though, each baby is unique. Some don’t have much or any hair at birth.
Your Pregnant Belly
Whoa! You might notice your 30 weeks pregnant belly getting pretty hard and tight at times. Yep, at 30 weeks pregnant Braxton Hicks contractions are pretty common. These are your body’s way of gearing up for the main event (labor, of course!). Braxton Hicks tend to happen after exercise, or when you’re tired or dehydrated. If you get them, sit down or lie on your side, relax, and drink water. If the contractions don’t stop, or if you have four or more in an hour, call your doctor. It could actually be preterm labor.
30 weeks pregnant weight gain should be about 8 to 11 kg. However, if you’re pregnant with twins, it may be more like 13 to 18 kg.
Worried about this weight gain? Don’t be. The extra pounds you’ve put on will act as reserves to help you breastfeed baby. There’s no need to agonize over them or to rush to take them off; it’s taken you nine months to put the weight on, and it will take at least that long to take it off.
As your skin stretches, you may notice that your belly starts itching. This is another normal part of pregnancy. Just take care not to scratch the itchy skin, as this will just make it worse. Instead, try massaging your abdomen gently with moisturizing lotion.
As your uterus gets bigger and pushes your diaphragm up into your lungs, breathing gets more difficult. Towards the end of your pregnancy (around 37 or 38 weeks pregnant) though, you may find breathing a little easier, as your baby drops down into your pelvis, easing up on your diaphragm and lungs. If you have problems breathing when you lie down, try sleeping in a semi-sitting position, using pillows for support.
Your Week 30 Checklist!
- Get plenty of calcium, iron, and protein to help your baby develop.
- Massage your itching belly with lotion; scratching will only make it worse.
